Kendal College launches new prospectus featuring augmented reality
17 October 2011
TweetKendal College today launched the first college prospectus of its kind, featuring augmented reality. Readers equipped with the right kind of smartphones can download the Kendal College app and see pages come to life, with students talking about their courses and why they chose Kendal College.
The App, which uses technology developed by the company Autonomy, can be downloaded free from the Apple App store and, within the next few days, the Android Marketplace. By simply pointing the phone's camera at certain photographs in the prospectus the app will bring those photographs to life as a short movie. For best results the phone should be connected to a wifi network.
Those readers that don't have a compatible smartphone, such as Blackberrys, can download popular QR reading software which will take them to the youtube version on the college's website, or alternatively just type in the web address on the page to access the content from a computer.
The technology in the prospectus has come as a result of work art and design lecturer Dan Hodge was doing with the graphic design Summer School this year, and has been doing with his art students for World Skills, the largest international skills competition, held between the 5th and the 8th of October 2011 at the ExCel Exhibition Centre at London’s Docklands. The event drew over 150,000 visitors with Kendal College’s interactive art installation wowing people from all over the world.
Art and Design lecturer Dan Hodge said: “This has been a brilliant journey, from the three rounds of judging for World Skills and three months of building the exhibit and then applying the technology in our very own prospectus. Following the World Skills event we’ve had people blogging about what we’re doing all over the world.”
Marketing Manager Paul Goodwin said: “Not only is it fabulous to be first with such cutting edge technology in our prospectus, but also because it’s a demonstration of what what we’re actually doing at the college; and it lets our students tell you what they think about Kendal College themselves, right from the printed page.”
