Kendal College sports students take a leap for charity and raise £575

27 January 2010

Kendal College Sports students were celebrating success as their efforts raised a total of £575 for charity, by organising three fund-raising events last term as part of their course. The events involved jumping off a building, running and swimming a hundred miles, and a group of lads even suffered a painful charity legwax!

As part of their course, outdoor adventure and sports students formed three groups and each was challenged to come up with an idea to raise money for charity. They were given £10 per group to fund each idea and bring it into fruition.

The first group; Karl Glasgow, Geoff Whitehead, Rebecca Haslam, Sean Ormerod, Chris Wood, Kristian Mercer & Dayle Saint: organised a 100 mile challenge where the members ran, swam, cycled and rowed a total of 100 miles, using Castle Green’s hotel leisure facilities which were kindly offered up for the event. They raised a total of £125 for the Calvert Trust, a charity that provides activities for disabled people.

The second group; Jordan Ireland, Laurence Clarke, Lewis Scott, Glenn Harris, Christopher Strachan, Janet Holt and Rosie Atkinson: organised a charity abseil off the top of the college on 14 December, where students and staff at the college were sponsored to take an abseil down the side of the college’s main site on Milnthorpe Road. The second group raised a total of £300 for Cancer Research UK.

The third group; Terry Brennand, Tom Bowker, Joe Roberts, Stuart Dixon, Luke Wallace, Michael Stanway, Steffan Lewis, Jordan Woodhouse & Gareth Dunne: organised a charity legwax and students from the beauty therapy department obliged by waxing the lad’s legs in a special event that was held on the 7 December. The third group raised a total of £150 for United Through Sport, an international sports charity that unites people around the world to play sport and tackle social inequality.

Sports lecturer Andy Lord said: “As well as being great fun for the students, this has given them the opportunity to develop team-building and entrepreneurial skills. Working within a tight budget they had to liaise with outside companies and put together and execute a plan and stick to it. The exercise helped them to develop the necessary skills to complete the Organising a Sporting Event module on their course, which required them to research local charities and develop their organisational and planning skills.”

Kendal College runs a number of different sports and active leisure courses, including sports, outdoor adventure and uniformed service, with qualifications that are equivalent to three A levels or 360 Ucas points, meaning students can get direct access to university sports courses.
