Kendal degree students’ art and design exhibition

4 December 2009

Foundation Degree students will be exhibiting their brand new works of art in the run up to Christmas, with a special exhibition at Kendal College’s arts and media campus on Wildman Street. The exhibition, which starts on the 1 December will showcase a selection of the students work and demonstrate a range of creative approaches to drawing.

Students on the Foundation Degree come from a wide variety of backgrounds, with some adults returning to study because they want to develop themselves within a richly creative environment and some students who are choosing it as an alternative to moving away to a traditional art college to study a degree.

The Foundation Degree in drawing offers a highly innovative and exciting form of study. There are a broad range of practical and theoretical modules, which help equip students with skills to support their existing practice or access a variety of new careers. Students will leave the course capable of pursuing a career as a practising artist or with-in the illustration, design, teaching or arts management industries.
We have a highly experienced range of lecturers from practicing artists and designers and an exciting programme of guest lecturers, visits, external exhibitions and public commissions.

Course tutor Sorrel Straford said: “The degree is now in its second year and is developing into a very exciting programme. The students are proving to be a vibrant collective of highly motivated creatives, sharing and developing ideas; and they are set to emerge and develop the creative world in the South Lakes”

Sorrel adds “We are very fortunate to have grown our lecturing team this year, with weekly contextual lectures from the Gareth Longstaff who is based at Newcastle University, and exciting drawing and making workshops with international Glass designer Jo Vincent. The second year students are about to embark on their live project working with a gallery in Glasgow”

All the students have purpose built individual studio spaces and a shop fronted gallery area where the current exhibition is being held. The studios and gallery will be open on Thursday 17th of December from 1-4pm if people want to come and chat to tutors about the course. There will also be a range of free taster days in January.

The Foundation Degree in Drawing is validated by the University of Cumbria and those students who successfully complete the course at Kendal College can top it up to a full BA Honours degree with a further period of study at the Cumbria Campus. Part-time Foundation Degree students may qualify for a means-tested grant, which may cover the cost of tuition and materials, depending on their income and circumstances.

To find out more or to book your place on one of the free taster events in January; call Denise Sprigings   on 01539 814634.
