This course is designed for any health and social care worker who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of end of life care. This could be in many types of settings who deal with end of life care including palliative care needs.

What will I learn?

You will learn about the principles and practices of person centred approaches to end of life care. This includes how to work with individuals their families and other services to tailor care provision to suit each person you care for. You will consider the emotional issues around death and dying and the place of palliative care within end of life care. It also has relevance to all types of care settings, including hospice, care homes, care in the community and primary care. This course is also appropriate for those who have already achieved other sector specific qualifications in the health care sector and need to apply their understanding in a palliative care context.

The programme is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the emotive issues surrounding death and dying. It will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of palliative care and its place within end of life care, along with support services available to the individual and others. Discussions around the use of a ‘person-centred’ approach to meet the physical, emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs of people nearing the end of life and their families.

How will I be assessed?

There will be a variety of written coursework assignments which will need to be undertaken outside of the class time. You will be allocated your own study pack and have a personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. This will mainly consist of a written assessment for each unit.

Entry requirements

You will need to be able to demonstrate level 2 literacy skills and hold at least a level 2 qualification in the Health and Social care sector. You should be working (or volunteering) in a setting that delivers end of life care, or elements of it.
