Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness), Level 3
- Courses starting September. Call 01539 814700 for details.
If you’re interested in sports coaching, fitness instructing or the development of sport this is the course for you. This course usually takes place over 3 days per week.
You complete the 90-credit Diploma in the first year and the Extended Diploma in the second year. The two-year course is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is worth up to 168 UCAS points (Triple Distinction*) or 144 UCAS points (Triple Distinction). UCAS have recently changed the UCAS Tariff from September 2017 so they could include more qualifications. The new Tariff points are lower than the original Tariff points but the value remains the same, as universities will just use lower Tariff numbers in their entry requirements than in previous years.
You will benefit from taking part in sport at a variety of outstanding local facilities, including Carus Green Golf Club, Kendal Leisure Centre, Ulverston Tennis Centre, Kendal Squash Club. You will also benefit from small class sizes and will work with industry professionals in a variety of settings to support your career in the Sport and Leisure Industry.
The course involves a variety of visits to enhance student knowledge and the ability to work with employers. Recent trips have included visits to St George’s Park (Football Association National Centre) and Club La Santa Resort in Lanzarote.
The course will allow you to develop your organisational skills through planning sports events, motivational skills through delivering exercise sessions and leadership skills through the various additional courses that are completed on the course.
You will also increase your own personal and fitness levels! You will also have the opportunity to undertake sports volunteering, gain a National Governing Body award and compete for the College’s sports teams.
All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a ‘C’ grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.
This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.
What will I learn?
It is a mixture of practical and theory, and you will study subjects such as principles of anatomy and physiology, fitness training, organising sports events, work experience in sport and sports coaching.
As well as leaving the college with the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness), you can also choose between the Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing or Level 1 FA Award in Coaching Football.
You will also gain a variety of young leader awards such as Rugby, Tennis, Football, Hockey. Other opportunities include Football Refereeing and Lifeguard Qualifications.
You will complete two-weeks of work experience at a relevant organisation, such as a local school, gym, leisure centre or professional sports club.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments will be ongoing throughout your level 3 course. You will be required to complete assessments such as designing a Prezi on roles and responsibilities of sports coaches, completing a group discussion on sports hydration, designing a 6 week training programme.
You will be assessed by video, discussion, presentation, delivery of a session and practical assessment.
