Outdoor Programmes, Level 3 Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships allow you to gain qualifications whilst working - you will gain knowledge and experience through working in a centre environment. The Apprenticeship will enable you to prepare, lead and review appropriate outdoor activity sessions in a safe, engaging

and inclusive manner and is ideally suited for anyone who works as an activity leader, outdoor instructor, or specific job role such as a climbing wall

What will I learn?

You’ll cover key areas such as organising people and resources, good working relationships, conservation and health and safety of both customers and colleagues. You can also choose options specific to the outdoor programme you lead, whether it’s for education, recreation or development training.

During your Advanced Apprenticeship you study Outdoor Programmes qualification at level 3. There is a different framework for the three different pathways. To achieve this qualification, all candidates need to complete 5 core units:

- Contribute to improving personal and organisational performance
- Organise people and resources for outdoor programmes
- Promote the conservation of the environment
- Ensure the health, safety, welfare and security of customers and staff
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships in the outdoors

Depending on your pathway, you then choose further core units for the following pathways:

- Outdoor Education pathway
- Outdoor Development Training pathway
- Outdoor Recreation pathway

Next: Assessment

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in the workplace and cover off-the-job training at the group meetings. You will build a portfolio of evidence gathered from working with real equipment, facilities and customers, as part of your day to day employment.

As part of the apprenticeship framework, reviews are completed every 12 weeks by the assessor where progress is discussed by the apprentice, assessor and employer.

Entry requirements

You should have a minimum of five GCSEs at A*-C to include English or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction.
