This programme is for those who wish to start their career journey into Healthcare. You will study for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (equivalent to 3 A Levels) at the College for three days per week and spend two days per week on placement at University Hospital Morecambe Bay Trust, gaining significant practical hands-on experience that will develop your skills and employability further.
A key feature of this programme is the fact that you will spend 40% of your week for two years gaining hands-on work experience in a hospital setting and this will be ideal preparation to support you to move into the health profession. During your placement, you will work across the Trust in ward, clinical and therapy areas in direct contact with patients, supported by ward staff and gaining first-hand experience. A selection of activities you can expect to be completed during your training includes: talking and reassuring patients, feeding patients, X rays and assisting with bathing and dressing patients. You can on occassion expect to be involved in observing ward rounds and non-invasive clinical procedures.
The course is 2 years in duration and you will gain an Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care Level 3. Equivalent to 3 A Levels.
This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.
How will I be assessed?
After the course you could:
- Study at university to gain a degree
- Study as a higher level or degree apprentice while in employment
- Apply for full-time employment in a wide variety of health care roles

As well as other Allied Health Professions such as radiography, theatre, occupational therapy and podiatry. Note: this list is only a small selection of possible opportunities that would be open to you after successfully completing this course.
You will need to have 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (or 4 in 9-1 GCSE’s), including Maths and English Language. A grade C or above in a GCSE Science subject would be advantageous but is not essential.
Through the application process and at the interview you will also be expected to demonstrate a passion and commitment to working in the health sector.
