Engineering Technology, Level 2

Course start date:
04 Sep 2017
Course end date:
28 Jun 2018

Engineering underpins just about everything from transport to medicine and farming to space exploration. To meet all of these needs requires a vast number engineers who can work in technical disciplines.

With environmental technologies being at the forefront of the new green economy, there are hundreds of jobs expected to be created in the next few years, both nationally and locally, which require people with the skills to support the aeronautical, creative, digital, food, farming, marine, mining and tourism related industries.

The word ‘engineer’ derives from the Latin word to ‘create’ and ‘cleverness’. Engineers design and create components that can change the world. You will analyse things and come up with solutions. The career opportunities are endless across the sector, from sourcing the raw materials to assembling products to managing the workforce. Engineering is an interesting and popular career, with skilled tradesman in high demand.

This course usually runs over 3 days a week. The department has state-of-the-art equipment enabling you to gain practical experience e.g. 3D printers, CAD software, HAAS lathe and mill, CNC machines that create metal products and Robotic Arms for high precision work. The department also recently bought a 2-seater Microlight!

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a ‘C’ grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.

Next: What will I learn?

What will I learn?

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to solve practical problems of an engineering nature.

This course will give you the opportunity to study a wide range of engineering subjects, including electronics, maintenance and manufacturing, developing your skills and understanding in engineering and computer aided design (CAD). You will use CAD machines to design and manufacture components used in a wide range of engineering specialisms. You will also develop essential maths skills for engineering.

You will also learn about the industry through trips and speakers. Students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of trips e.g. local visits to Gilkes, BAE and Siemens, and international trips to Brussels and Barcelona. On the trip to Brussels, students visited the Toyota Research and Development Centre, the Microsoft Innovation Centre and talked to a MEP about his work reducing emissions. Students also recently benefited from a talk by Samantha Burman, a motorcycle road racer who works for Tartae Steel and makes her own machine parts for her motorcycle.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be via ongoing assignments and practical activities throughout the year. You will build up a PEO Performing Engineering Operations - a portfolio that employers are looking for.

Next: Career Opportunities?

Career Opportunities

On achievement of the level 2 qualification, you can progress on to the level 3 course.  Level 2 programmes can open up opportunities for you to seek employment as an advanced apprentice engineer..  Following successful completion of level 3, you could go straight into work or progress to university or higher level qualifications.

Recognition of your qualifications by employers can lead to rapid career development in the workplace.
