Digital Games (Creative Media), Level 3

Course start date:
04 Sep 2017
Course end date:
29 Jun 2018

This course is designed to give a technical understanding of the digital games industry. There will be opportunities to develop digital games through practical projects in areas such as game engine 2D animation, 3D environments and coding for web based games.

This course usually takes place over 3 days per week for two years. The two-year course is worth up to 168 UCAS points (Triple Distinction*) or 144 UCAS points (Triple Distinction). UCAS have recently changed the UCAS Tariff from September 2017 so they could include more qualifications. The new Tariff points are lower than the original Tariff points but the value remains the same, as universities will just use lower Tariff numbers in their entry requirements than in previous years.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a ‘C’ grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.

What will I learn?

The course considers a range of media from different sectors to explore how meaning, messages and values are constructed through formal and stylistic elements. There will be opportunities to work to client briefs to demonstrate technical and creative skills in the production of a complete project. Units covered will look to develop your planning skills, as well as allowing you to gain more insight into requirements such as finance, logistics and regulations.

The course also explores the web production lifecycle, conventions to produce a website and asset preparation to add interactivity to your site.

On this course you will take part in lively discussions about new gaming technology, media campaigns and review the latest developments within the sector as they are released. The department organises talks, for example, this year Teesside University came to talk about Mobile App Development. They also organise industry relevant visits and trips, for example EGX at the NEC.
