A You can Do It course at Kendal College will give you the skills and know-how to tackle any job, big or small. You’ll gain much more than a more beautiful and functional lifestyle, too- doing a DIY project is a great confidence booster. Whether it’s installing new flooring, adding unique touches to your home, you’ll soon learn DIY is far more than three little letters.
What to expect
The You Can Do It courses, will cover a few key components. DIY is all about using your hands to manifest your creativity into something useful, so you’ll spend time honing your problem-solving and creative skills. To make sure you and others stay safe throughout your project, you’ll learn the importance of adhering to safety measures and following regulations. The course will also cover the usage of equipment like power tools and chemicals. All in all, a You Can Do It course will benefit you far beyond that set of shelves you’ve been dreaming about putting up, as it provides you with the skills, know-how, and confidence to create for the rest of your life.
The Building Maintenance course covers Carpentry, Tiling, Plastering and Health & Safety. Students also have the choice to gain experience in Bricklaying or Painting & Decorating. The Extended course (starting on 3rd June for 24 weeks) will enable students to cover this in more depth and also gain knowledge in Plumbing.
You will cover safe working practices: which includes safe maintenance, use and storage of tools and equipment.
The type of tasks which will be covered includes Building maintenance tasks: e.g. repair, maintenance or replacement of sticking doors; draughty doors and windows; broken hinges; loose floorboards; gaps in floorboards; damaged skirting boards; rotten timber, e.g. floors, doors and windows; cracks in brickwork; damaged pointing and rendering; broken windows and tiles; airlocks in pumps and radiators; blockages, e.g. in drains, basins, lavatories and gullies; failed plumbing components, e.g. washers, ball valves, diaphragms; leaking capillary joints and compression joints; failed electrical components, e.g. fuses, switches, sockets, plugs, ceiling roses, thermostats.
Assessment will vary and include a multiple choice exam and practical assessment.
