The Foundation Studies Art & Design (Photography). This post A level Photography course is designed to help students unlock their potential for creative photography. This course is recognised by universities and art colleges as providing an excellent preparation for study at degree level and will also provide you with the skills needed to progress directly into employment. This course usually takes place over 3 days per week.
The course is very intensive and stimulates inventive and experimental analysis of photography within the key context of visual arts. Professional camera and studio equipment and facilities coupled with the latest technology and a professional working environment are key benefits of studying at Kendal College.
The Foundation course tutors are experienced professional practitioners who continue to work in industry and bring real-world experience, excellent industry contacts and huge creative energy to the course.
Foundation student’s benefit from a wide range of activities and opportunities that provide exciting outlets for their creative work. Our students provided the photography for the opening exhibition for the Abbot Hall art galleries prestigious Face Value show, exhibiting alongside internationally famous artists like Tracey Emin, Lucien Freud and Howard Hodgkin. They also worked with the Comic Arts festival, photographed events with the Mayors office and worked with lava House Graphics design team on promotional campaigns for national clients. Students will be involved in a number of exhibitions where they will show their work to an invited audience and organise private viewings.
This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.
What will I learn?
This course will teach you fundamental and advanced camera skills with both film and digital cameras, give you access to creative darkroom skills that offer an alternative experience to photographic image making and allow you to learn and experiment in a professional studio environment.
The course will provide a strong grounding within the key areas of creative photography including creative thinking and development of ideas in photography, fundamental camera technique through to advanced and experimental photography, social documentary and the application of photo-journalistic image making, conceptual photography ideas leading to exhibition work and work practice and industry placements with professional practitioners. There will be opportunities to develop skills in studio photography practice and key lighting skills and digital image manipulation and imaging workflows with industry standard software.
A challenging program of assignments and photo-shoots will provide a platform to gain real-world photography experiences with opportunities to exhibit and publish your work.
Students learn through a process of primary research, including residential visits to London galleries and exhibitions, Manchester and Liverpool, and locally within their own community, as well as secondary sources. Initial ideas are taken into workshops, seminars, developmental studio work and experimental practical processes.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through a continuous assessment of portfolio and project work evaluations leading to a final major project. At Kendal College, Foundation students use the Wordpress blogging system to record and evidence all their work.
Foundation students have progressed onto fine art, documentary, fashion photography and other related degree courses (graphic design, film, animation etc) at universities across country, including London College of Fashion, London College of Communication, Central St. Martins and Goldsmiths, Swansea, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Blackpool and Carlisle.
Other students have progressed directly into a wide variety of creative industries locally (graphic design, social photography and event design) and some students find the natural progression route for them is start their own business as a freelance.
This programme is suitable for both 18+ applicants with Art and/or Design qualifications intending to apply to higher education and mature applicants (21+) for whom we would be happy to interview you based on a representative portfolio of your art/photography work.
